However, I see many ways that I can introduce and teach the process of collaboration to my students at a very early age. My initial thoughts for a project include the following:

Purpose: to increase student's intelligibility

Type: collaborate with UMD communication sciences (speech path) students for practice and feedback on school days when they don't have therapy. This gives students more practice time in the hopes of more rapid progess with their intelligiblity, and also gives the UMD students a different learning experience.

Scope: I think I would try this for a two week period, with the understanding that, if it works well, we would continue over a 6 week period.

Collaborators: preschool students and UMD communication science students.

Digital tools: skype?

As far as assessments, I would do a simple baseline of correct vs. incorrect sound productions prior to beginning this "experiment" and then at the half way point and the end of the six weeks to assess progress. Students could also use a simple check mark in a correct/incorrect column to assess their own accuracy. Picture symbols could be used to represent the words they're producing. Because I work with small groups, a collaborative approach could be used as they learn how each sound is made and give each other feedback on sound production. A very simplified version of the communication checklist could be developed with the children's help to help them learn about the characteristics of a good collaborator and could then be used for self assessment and assessment by peers or therapist.

The feedback issue is a critical one. I often require peer review and despite having to phyiscally check yes/no and comment, I still have students turn in checklists with smiley faces and "good job" written overtop the heinous errors. And, like others have mentioned, the student then gets frustrated because they've already had someone look over their work. Sometimes I require an adult review, and I get similar results--moms and dads saying their favorite part was "The whole thing, honey" or the constructive criticism is on something silly like, "I wish you would have chosen a more wholesome topic" (that's a true one), rather than getting to structure, spelling, organization, etc.

Students have had a lot of practice with collaborative work. Many students seem to have a good idea of how to share ideas and give feedback, but other students can’t seem to find ways to be effective and end up wasting any collaborative work time given during class. For all students, giving feedback seems to be the most challenging task. When students understand the work, they still struggle to give feedback that is useful for other students (other than the feedback of just giving answers, which isn’t useful feedback at all).

To improve students’ abilities to collaborate effectively, they need to think explicitly about what good feedback is, and how to decide what feedback to give for any task. I think the teacher needs to spend some time modeling how to think about what feedback to give and how to give it, and then student checklists can be made and used to help.

In math, the biggest challenge may be to get students to think critically about a problem after it has been solved, which was discussed in one of the problem solving articles attached in the Intel module 4 section. This requires examining a problem that has been answered correctly and deciding what was done along the way that helped to come up with the solution.
Yes, the learning from mistakes has been a huge part of our classroom community this year. I recognized right away in September that students were placing "perfection expectations" on themselves and there were a lot of tears (3rd grade). We've had many conversations and revisited the topic often that this is the time in their lives to make mistakes and that when they get old like me, people aren't perhaps as forgiving! This began a tally sheet by a few students of how many mistakes I made in a day (I told them that I probably made at least 10 a day). It was entertaining and proved my point. They are much more comfortable giving ideas and feedback now that they know , even if they make a mistake, it will be a learning moment.
To hurins, tbynum & Bruce

In order to do this, we have spent an even greater amount of time working on building community and becoming comfortablw with each other. I teach a 2/3 multi-age, so this was an extremely important step to ensure the second graders wouldn't be intimidated. I truly feel that the students in my class are great at sharing, with the exception of two young men who are terribly shy. I have worked with them and they are getting better- at the beginning of the year, they wouldn't even share something they did over the summer. It is my hope that by being the "older, wiser" students next year, they will begin to blossom and feel free to share.

Giving and receiving Feedback: This is an area where I know I have room for growth as a teacher. This is something we do in a very informal setting. I know the students feel comfortable enough to offer advice, support and ideas to each other. However, it is not something that I have facilitated in a formal manner. I think that the use of rubrics to evaluate each other would be a great way to teach students to offer constructive opprotunities for growth to one another. This is something I will try to get better at next year.

Mentoring: This is somthing that my students are fantastic at. Due to the fact that I teach a multi-age we spend a great amount of time working with a buddy.
Sharing thoughts and ideas:

Strengths: Most of my students are pretty vocal about their thoughts. Using a student response system does give voice to all and is a great tool for fostering discussions. I'm sure the same will be true for upcoming students. Ensuring that the classroom is a safe place for sharing is critical.

Needs-I'd like to try blogging with my students next year or presenting info on a wiki. Effectively monitoring that will be my challenge.

Giving and Getting Feedback:

Strengths-Overall my students are polite to each other and are usually receptive to the ideas of their classmates. They are not good at giving constructive feedback. Usually the responses are the vague type-"Good job."

Needs-Modeling the giving and receiving of quality feedback with the help of an age-appropriate rubric or checklist is the way to go. I want to focus on this early on next year and then try having the kids post a piece of work where others can offer suggestions, corrections, etc. Opening up their work to a wider audience with the use of something like Voicethread would be something 5th graders could handle.

Peer Mentoring:

Strengths-My current students are great at helping each other. They work together frequently to compare work and discuss what they are doing.

Needs-My goal is to be more purposeful about promoting the "experts" in my classroom, especially when it comes to technology. The peer editing also allows the students to do some mentoring with one another.
Most students are willing to share ideas, under one condition, it's in a small group. Only about 1/2 are willing to share to the large group. We continually need go over the ediquette of listening and not just saying, "I liked the details" (vague answering). I think I'd like to try a mini-lesson on, "What good feedback is". Show them what is good feedback then what isn't. Maybe have them provide an example of each. Mentoring Peers can go great as it is closely monitored. I love the critical friend idea Terri mentioned. I would want to match up students so they balance each other. I'd provide a rubric of expectations and again model what is good mentoring skills in a mini-lesson.
Sharing Ideas: Our students have no problem sharing ideas, keeping them on topic is not always easy. I would love to use it to collaborate on a project being done in a different part of the country or state to compare information based on our location.

I would also like to try Social bookmarking. I like the idea of being able to highlight or bookmark information for students. I think it would make searching for information much easier at the intermediate level. The only draw back I've noticed is that most sites require a username and password, which is linked to an email address. Has anyone used something that doesn't require a username or email?
@hippt

I have math software that can be used to model steps in solving a single variable algebra equation. I would use this in conjunction with a screencast recording tool like Jing.

Students would follow a checklist of elements they need to include as they show how to solve the equation by manipulations (a visual element with the math software on a computer) and explain (by talking). The explanation would include justification of the steps. The screencast recording would take only about 1-2 minutes. Each student group would have a different problem so the class could cover different types. All the screencasts could also be put on a classwebsite as vodcasts.

I have already done this in class but with only one class computer, only one group at a time can use the software. They often do interviews with people in their school community using voice output devices. Doing podcasts or vodcasts of these interviews would allow us to share them with parents, etc. so that they have a better understanding of what their children are doing and learning during their school day.
There were so many tools to explore, it took forever for me to get through this module!!
